Top portable monitors

If you want to be more productive when using your computer, the ideal scenario is to connect two or more screens to your PC or laptop. But what if you are on a business trip? The solution is a portable monitor.

With multiple monitors, you can open a spreadsheet on one screen, edit a document on another, and chat with co-workers on Skype or Slack on a third. But what if you later find yourself in a hotel room with only one laptop and just can't remember how to work with one display? To alleviate these concerns, we've listed the best portable monitors you can buy right now for work, play, and general use.

USB-A and USB-C

Before we start, we need to understand the difference between USB-C and USB-A connections from the point view video output. The USB-C port on your PC may support DisplayPort, which is an alternative to HDMI. However, this is not a guarantee, as manufacturers may limit the USB-C connection to power, data transfer, or a combination of the two. Before buying a USB-C based portable monitor, it's worth checking out the specs of your PC.

If your USB-C port supports the DisplayPort protocol, you can simply connect your portable monitor to your PC without installing additional software. This does not apply to USB-A connections as they do not support video output. To connect a display via USB-A, you will need the DisplayLink drivers installed on your PC. Moreover, if the USB-C port supports data but not DisplayPort, you will still need DisplayLink drivers.

You can download the latest drivers here:

Many of the portable monitors listed below use a USB-A or USB-C connection. You'll also find standard DisplayPort and HDMI connections on several devices along with Micro and Mini. You will even come across models that require a separate power supply, while others draw power directly from the PC.

TN and IPS

One screen in our list has a TN type matrix, while all the others have IPS. Short for Twisted Nematic, TN technology is the oldest of the two, serving as the first type of LCD panel to replace CRT monitors. Advantages - short response time, high brightness level and ultra-high update frequency, making TN panels perfect for games. However, they do not provide extensive viewing angles and do not support more color shades.

IPS, abbreviated from In-Plane Switching, serves as the successor of TN technology. The IPS panels are ideal for creating and accurate content color reproduction due to support for more than 16 million colors and wide viewing corners. The update frequency and response time improved over the years, but the gamers can better use TN displays if the color depth is not put in priority.
