Overclocking is amenable to any monitor. Only the connection port with its throughput can be restricted. For example, DisplayPort 1.4 supports 4K at a renewal frequency 120 Hz, A HDMI 2.0 - also 4K, but only 60 Hz. It is also nice to know the features of the matrix, as they can also influence the outcome of overclocking.
How to overclock the monitor: The beginning
First of all, let's talk about what an indicator will increase. The clock frequency, as on the processor or , the video card, it is impossible to increase on the monitor - it does not have such a characteristic at all.
The monitor acceleration means exceeding the rated frequency of the matrix update.
What is the update frequency? This is a characteristic that shows how many times in a second one picture is replaced by another. So, the display of 60 Hz will update the image 60 times per second. The update frequency is approximately the same as frame frequency per second (FPS), only it implies that the monitor replaces the image regardless of whether new frames appeared in it or not. And the FPS in turn shows how many new frames of the video card visualizes every second.
When the monitor is accelerated, the image update frequency is set above the nominal value. Usually this procedure is carried out for the sake of a more enjoyable gameplay: except in games to see the advantages of increased update frequency more and no place. If the FPS overclocking was higher than the update frequency, then after you can see more unique frames per second (if more precisely, you will not notice any individual frames, just in general the picture will become more pleasant to perceive).
Although we said that you can overclock any monitor, but even two products of the same model can have small differences that can affect the end result. What to talk about the monitors of different brands. Therefore, keep in mind: after overclocking your monitor can show the worst result than exactly the same colleague at the next table.
And yet: the monitor overclocking is actually not about the monitor itself, but about the matrix in it, since it is responsible for the visualization. Try to overclocking more information about the screen matrix: help the user's manual, manufacturer site, a variety of forums, etc.
Some monitors are sold with factory overclocking. Additional manipulations on them may be ineffective.
How to overclock the monitor?
Methods are several. We have chosen three tools that work with almost all AMD, NVIDIA and Intel video adapters and now we will tell you how to use them. If you wish, you can find another program, but its compatibility with your video chip will have to find out yourself.
No matter which overclocking utility you choose, first of all you need to know how to change the update frequency in Windows. Go to "Parameters" - "System" - "Display" - "Advanced Display Options" - "Properties of the Video Adapter" - "Monitor". There you will see the drop-down list. You can specify the update frequency from the available values.
Any attempt to overclock is better to start with small and all changes gradually.
Initial indicators, as well as the result of overclocking, we recommend that you check using the online frame skip utility Blur Busters. For test, make a photo screen with long shutter speed (not a screenshot). If a series of continuous squares appeared, acceleration was successful. There are gaps - go skipping frames, optimization is required.
And now proceed to the acceleration tools.
Utility of non-standard resolution of CRU
Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) - Free Software Product From the developer toastyx. It is intended to install arbitrary values of permission and frequency of updating monitors with graphics from NVIDIA and AMD. Since this function is performed by branded utilities from the NVIDIA and AMD, constantly have no sense on the computer of CRU. But this program is needed to overclock.
Load the archive with CRU, remove the four executable files, start Cru.exe and follow these steps.
- In the drop-down menu from above, select the active display.
- In the "Detailed Resolutions" section, click "Add".
- In the Timing drop-down list, install "Automatic (PC)" for the PC IPS monitor or "Automatic (HDTV)" for the TV.
- Enter the desired update frequency in the Frequency Refresh Rate field.
- Click OK.
Restart the computer and execute the Windows instructions to make changes to force. If the screen has shown or appeared artifacts, do not panic - something went wrong, after a few seconds Windows will return to the previous value of the update frequency. Most likely, you indicated too high parameters, and the matrix did not cope with them. But if everything is in order, you can return to Cru and continue experiments.
NVIDIA Control Panel
For manipulations with NVIDIA video cards there is a proprietary software NVIDIA control panel (not GeForce Experience - Drivers are updated via it).
By the way about drivers - update to the latest version of them and at the same time control panel. And then follow the steps below.
- In the "Display" section, select "Change Resolution".
- Click "Set up".
- Check the "Enable permissions that are not displayed" checkbox, then "Create Custom Resolution".
- Specify a new value in the "Update Frequency" field.
- Click "Test".
- Select a new profile, update the update frequency drop-down list.
- Select "Apply".
A new update frequency can be immediately seen in NVIDIA control panels. However, this value is not always true, therefore, before pressing the "Apply" button, you will not see the result of overclocking. If Windows does not detect errors, the procedure can be repeated by increasing the indicator.
AMD owners are also lucky: monitor overclocking can be conducted with a standard application by Radeon. Make sure you use the latest version by Radeon and relevant drivers. And then proceed to acceleration.
- Click the "Settings" icon on the uppermost part of the window.
- Select the "Display" tab.
- Select "Create" next to the "Custom Permissions" field.
- Specify the desired update frequency in the "Update Frequency" field.
- Click "Save".
We remind you that overclocking should be carried out gradually, starting with a minor increase. Be sure to check how the monitor and the system copes with new indicators. If there are no problems - move on.
What are you risking, accelerating the monitor?
Unlike processor overclocking or video card, the monitor acceleration is not hazard. And if you ever changed screen resolution, you should guess why. For those who do not know, explain: Windows, NVIDIA control panels and by Radeon automatically roll back the settings of the screen to previous ones if the changes are not confirmed for a certain number time. If acceleration passed incorrectly, it is enough to wait about 30 seconds that the display returns to its original state.
If there are no bands, flicker and other artifacts on the screen, new values can be saved. And in order to make sure that they really applied, refer to the already mentioned Utility Blur Busters.
The update frequency above the nominal increases energy consumption and reduces the service life of the monitor.
Most problems with acceleration can be avoided if you know the device and operating conditions of the panel. As already mentioned, some manufacturers apply factory overclocking, and this nuance may not be mentioned in the instructions or on the monitor box. Additional acceleration over the existing will not give good results.
